Write the following essay and submit as a word-processed document at the start of the exam period
(where we will do the listening) on Thursday, October 21. Late exams will not be accepted this time
except under very unusual circumstances, and then only with my prior approval.
I intend for you to draw on the material presented in class since the last midterm as you write the
essay, and you have access to all of the Powerpoints, as well as the notes I expect that you have taken.
I do not expect (or especially want) you to spend time looking for information in other books or
resources—some of you made the process for the first midterm much more time-consuming and
complicated than it needed to be. This is not a research essay or assignment, but an exam of what you
should already have in your head. In particular (remembering the day we spent discussing sources at
the beginning of the semester), you should not be consulting undocumented tertiary, such as web
pages or the Encylopedia Brittanica. If you need a quick fact check or to fill in small details, The Grove
Dictionary (Oxford Music Online in the library database list), in which individual articles are written
by academic specialists in particular subject areas, should be your go-to source.
Question:
Choose two developments that occurred between the 13th
and 16th
centuries that you think were
especially significant or influential in changing the path/direction of music during that period. Explain
each development in detail and explain, using numerous examples, why each one was so significant or
influential.
There is no one single answer to this question, but multiple ways you could answer. Make sure,
though that you justify your selection with examples and other data. And have some fun doing this
— there are many exciting developments and interesting music to discuss!
Most of the information you need should be in the powerpoints I’ve provided. I have more, so please don’t hesitate to ask for whatever you might need!!
