Use the PowerPoints to help you here – make sure you include all relevant information to fully explain how the view is justified, how it is characterized, and how it works. Next, you are going to provide a critique of your moral theory – what problems or issues does it have, both theoretical and practical? Is this the way we ought to make moral decisions? Why or why not? Can we overcome these problems? If so, how? If not, why not? This section is just as important as your explanation. Choose the strongest (one or two clear problems) objections you can think of, fully develop and explain them, show why they create a problem for the view, then offer a thorough analysis of the objection – clearly show why the objection succeeds or fails. This process should take several paragraphs, as should your explanation section.
Your essay should be set up as follows:
1) Introduction – briefly and generally set up the discussion you intend to have within your essay
Include a thesis statement at the end of your introduction (it should be the last sentence) telling your reader what you hope to show or attempt to prove with your essay – “This essay hopes to show that X moral theory succeeds/fails because of reasons Y and Z.”
2) An in-depth explanation of your moral theory
What is the aim of your moral theory?
How is it characterized?
What is its theory of right conduct?
How does it justify its approach?
How does the theory work? How is it applied? Show all the steps.
3) Following your explanation of your theory, you need to critique it
What problems does this view have? Fully explain the objections that you raise. Choose one or two of the most significant problems the view faces.
How do they effect the theory’s practicality and usefulness? What specific issues do these objections create? Use examples to illustrate.
Can they be overcome? How? If not, why not? What might the architects of these views say in response to these worries? Are these responses sufficient?
4) Conclusion (reaffirm your thesis statement without merely restating content)

This essay is asking for you to make an argument about the efficacy of a moral theory – do not confuse crafting your own argument with offering a mere opinion. Arguments support the claims that they make with evidence and good reasons, mere opinions do not. You must give an argument here.
The essay should be typed, have 1-inch margins, be double spaced using 12-point font (with a normal theme – Times New Roman, Calibri, etc.), and should adhere to formal guidelines (have a title, check your grammar and sentence structure, if you are using any sources, cite them properly using parenthetical, in-text citations, and list the full bibliographic entry on a works cited page. This essay has a minimum word count of 800 content words (excludes name and class information, title, and work cited information).
