For next week’s paper, you will be combining everything we’ve done over the past few weeks to write a paper that compares and/or contrasts Douglass’s Narrative and Butler’s Kindred.
You have two questions which you can use to inspire your paper. Remember that these are questions and topics. IT IS UP TO YOU TO TAKE ONE OF THESE TOPICS AND RESPOND TO IT WITH A CLAIM OR ARGUMENT (Read: Thesis statement!)
Your paper should be 1200-1400 words long and uploaded to Canvas in a Word document. It should follow MLA formatting requirements including a works cited page with both books listed. Successful papers will not only employ successful comparison/contrast writing techniques; they will also show an understanding of the historical period when each work was written as well as demonstrate the ability to write about literature using close reading skills.
Potential questions to answer, choose one:
1. Both Frederick Douglass’s Narrative and Octavia Butler’s Kindred are examples of the slave narrative. In what ways are they similar as slave narratives and/or in what ways are they different? What accounts for their similarities or differences?
2. How is Dana’s fictional perspective as a black woman from the 1970s similar and/or different compared to Douglass’s non-fictional perspective as a black man in the 1800s? What are the benefits and/or limitations of each point of view?
