Write a 750-1000 word memo that summarizes and critiques one of the following readings from Unit One:
Erving Goffman. 1959. “Introduction” and “The Art of Impression Management” in The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life”
Marianne Cooper. 2014. “Introduction” in Cut Adrift: Families in Insecure Times
Itzigsohn, Jose, and Karida Brown. 2015. “Sociology and the Theory of Double Consciousness.” Du Bois Review 12(2): 231-48
Patricia Hill Collins, “Black Feminist Thought in the Matrix of Domination”
The memo should start by clearly stating the research question(s) of the author and their methods (if applicable). Then, in 1 paragraph, describe the author’s main ideas and argument in your own words and add supporting quotes from the article. Next, in 1 paragraph, select a passage from the reading – no more than three or four lines – and reflect on its meaning. By reflect, I mean students should indicate what the passage means to them, and how it relates to the overall argument of the text. Finally, in the remainder of the memo (1-2 paragraphs), students should engage critically with the material. Questions to consider include:
How does this material develop understandings of our contemporary society?
What is the significance of the question that the author is asking for the field of sociology? What are competing answers to that question?
What would be a different way of answering that question, maybe one you think is superior to the author’s approach?
How does the author’s perspective relate to your own interest?
What is the social-historical context of the work’s creation, as in, what was going on in the time the author was writing that might have influenced the work?
The first full draft of the Theory Memo must be posted to Blackboard (under the “Assignments” tab) no later than 9pm ET on Monday, October 4.
