We have seen the power and authority of kings expressed as fulfillment of the will of gods. We have also seen examples of the gods opposing the will of kings. Choose at least three kings from among the kings named on the Identification list above (one must be from Mesopotamia, one from Egypt, one from Israel) and discuss how different sources (from our assigned readings) tell us stories of kings and gods that show the relationship between them sometimes working well, and sometimes not working well. Discuss also who tells us these stories (are they the kings themselves, priests or religious officials, religious officials speaking in the voice of a king, court officials, independent scholars?) and discuss why they tell the story–what is the message they want to communicate? Be specific in identifying your sources (for instance, you can cite the “book of Kings from the Bible” but you do not need to give exact chapters and verse) and be sure to give dates for all of the historical figures you mention.
