We have few poets in the course, but their work amplifies what all our readings share: a heightened importance of each word to achieve precision of expression. The result is a magnified set of associations and meanings created for the reader. Lowell founded the Imagist movement based on precision of expression. Her concept of image includes not just the popular sense of the word involving the sight, but refers to all the five sensory perceptions: sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste. Choose two poems from my selection (“The Letter,” “Madonna…,” “Opal,” “Summer Rain”, and “Decade” )and analyze how they use images to create associations and amplified meaning for the reader.
