For this week’s discussion, you can post an answer to any one of the following questions. (You do not have to answer both questions.)
Here is a 2012 HUD Report on discrimination in the housing and rental market. You can read and comment on any part of the report conclusions. I find the study very rigorous and convincing. Each year, the federal Housing and Urban Development agency (HUD) does this study to monitor discrimination to enforce Fair Housing Act. The study is conducted using paired testing method – sending professional testers of white, black, or Asian looking people with same financial background and presentation skills to visit realtors or apartment owners, as potential buyers or renters. The researchers want to see if they are treated differently in many different aspects: shown model home, offer rental incentives, etc. What really impresses me is that they record both situations where minorities are mistreated as well as situations where whites are mistreated, and then, they subtract the cases to get Net Discrimination numbers.
