Understanding even a few of our differences can allow us to act and treat people generally better. Over my late middle school and high school life, I’ve spent a relatively significant time online conversing with hundreds of different people from around the world. Along with this, I’ve had the privilege of being able to go to other countries and parts of the US to understand their lives. Being able to hear and see all different types of people has allowed me to gain a sort of empathy with more people and expand my viewpoints. For this question, I’m going to reflect on two different and educational experiences that were instrumental in changing my views. On my first trip to Africa, we took a boat from Spain to the northern half of Morocco to take a tour. We started off walking through the poorer parts of the country walking by homes and shops that you might never see anywhere in the US. This tour followed us through the streets eventually leading us to an almost hidden market. In this market, one saw everything you could ever want from a food market to a clothing shop and even a hardware vendor. Now, when Isay shop, I don’t mean your classic JC Penny in America. Imaginea person on the ground with a pile of t‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍hings or possibly a table hoping to sell anything. While walking through, I saw the desperation in these people from their difficult lives. They go day by day hoping to survive, with concerns that could barely come close to even my simple ones.. On the way out, my family noticed one woman sitting in the dirt with almost half a barrel of peppers. She had a bag of them on her side and offered them to us in the best English she could. This was a huge bag of peppers, something that would easily go for 20-30 dollars here in the states, and she offered it to us for 5 euros. 5!! This shocked my family and me, but we bought it. Looking at the people and what they went through for a few euros completely changed my views. That previous situation did shape my perspective on other countries in one way, but it is not the only one. There is also my experiences in Catalonia where I stayed for about a week. This week gave me a different perspective of a city, a celebration, and a terrible one of pizza. This place was beautiful with the city life booming right next door to the rural farms, almost intersecting. This place was great, but it had some significant differences from where I lived. Everything was just a higher quality and organic; something you see less and less often in the US. This food just changed my perspective on how they live relative to my life. The final aspect I noticed that was significantly different was the lack of a real need for a car. In this small city, you were able to get wherever you wanted without even thinking of using a car or even a bike. This car-free environment heavily differed from any non-major city I’ve ever seen in the US.
