This will be a 5-page analysis of a scholarly article focused on any aspect of fear or the monstrous.
Rubric
This assignment will give you experience in both researching and critically thinking about “monster” scholarship.
Each of you will need to do the following:
Find an article (either in a scholarly journal or in an edited volume of essays similar to Horror Comes Home) that focuses on a monster or any monstrous topic. Typically, these will be analytical essays that attempt to establish a thesis (which you should be able to find clearly stated within the first few introductory paragraphs).
Think about the author’s thesis. Did they make their case convincingly? Do they have a particular bias or agenda? Is their research strong (ie. lots of good scholarly stuff to back up their position)? Is their idea original, or just a rehash of common knowledge (ie. are they making a contribution to the body of knowledge)?
Write a 1,000-word paper (that’s basically 5 pages) discussing #2 above, using lots of solid examples. You can think they’re wonderful or you can tear them to shreds – or something in between. I’m far less interested in whether or not you agree with the author than I am in your criteria for your discussion and how you make your arguments.
You do not need to use the 5-paragraph essay format unless you want to. You do need to cite any sources you use (including the article you’re analyzing) and include a bibliography. I don’t care what citation style you use, as long as you’re consistent throughout your paper. You can—and should—use your own opinion, but you must back it up. No arm waving allowed! Be clear and specific.
