This week we learn more about African-American composers. Please google “African-American” or “Black” composer, and find someone to research. Columbia College Chicago is home to the Center for Black Music Research, which I believe is still closed due to Covid. However, that will be a great resource for you in the future if you decide you want to continue to investigate this area! Worksheet questions: 1.) Which composer did you choose? 2.) What are their dates, and where are they from? 3.) Generally speaking, what type of music do/did they write? 4.) How did they learn how to compose? 5.) Have you ever heard of this person before visiting the Center for Black Music Research? 6.) Is their music well-known today? 7.) Have they won awards for their work? 8.) What piece did you listen to by this composer? 9.) What did you think of it? What genre was it? What kinds of style attributes did it use? 10.) How does the piece compare with other music we have studied in the class? (We learned about show tunes, Opera, and other classical music)
