This is the final phase of our research process — you’ll be taking the material you’ve developed this semester and combining it into a final, cohesive research paper. This final submission will be due in Week 15. This is all directly connected to our research question from the first week of class. We enter the final phase: It is time to combine all your ideas together and discuss everything, holistically. Taking your Literature Review and your Position Paper, I want you to revise and combine the material together. You shouldn’t just copy and paste the material; instead, you need to revise and edit the material to match in tone and message, to match in documentation style, and to ensure that it reads as a single paper, rather than two separate essays. You may have to re-write or rethink portions of the essay. Your main goal here should be to first identify the present the actual discourse community (current debate), then present to the audience your position on the question at issue, and finally show the audience why they should care about this subject.
That final part will be an original contribution to the research essay; you must, in other words, explain why your topic is relevant to an audience, and show them why they should care. Ideally, this should be accomplished with source material that shows the audience a practical, real application; you may also take your own experiences and integrate that into this final phrase, discussing how you’ve observed it impact the world around you in practice. This serves as the culmination for all your ideas, and so I’ll be looking to see how you connect all the dots, so to speak, and finally show me how everything works together. This should be accomplished in 2,000 to 4,000 words.
