Gender and Socialization (2 minute video)
By the age of 2 we have learned our first lesson in diversity, the difference between a boy and a girl. By age 6 children have gendered ideas about intelligence as discussed in the Atlantic Monthly article. As time passes we also begin to understand that different rules exist for males, females and binary individuals. Based on one’s gender identity, an individual is expected to have certain skills, demonstrate specific behaviors, and even be permitted and/or encouraged to express particular emotions. The clothes we wear, our habits of hygiene, how we play, and where we work are often determined by whether we are male or female or binary, and our value to the society in which we live.
