The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to familiarize yourself with published research. Using your article, you will type a one-page abstract and answer some critical thinking questions about the article. The tasks of the assignment are as follows:
The article: http://dx.doi.org.ezproxy.mcckc.edu/10.1016/S0140-6736(19)30120-5
Identify your article by including a full APA style reference of it at the top of your assignment.
Briefly summarize article using the headlines most common to such empirical reports. These include the Introduction, which generally states a rationale for the investigation and the purpose of the study. The introduction also reviews relevant research. Next is the Method section, which includes a descriiption of the participants, instruments, and procedures. The Results section follows next, which addresses the significant findings of the study. Finally, comes the Discussion where the author(s) summarize(s) the findings and future directions.
Note that in writing an abstract you do not want to reproduce or summarize the entire article. Rather, you want to provide the most important information, as succinctly as possible in each of the aforementioned areas. Further, in some instances you might choose to replicate or incorporate part of the original text. In these cases you MUST put quotation marks around the words you are copying, followed by the page number in parentheses. You shouldn’t use more than one or two direct quotes.
Type your one-page abstract. If you run over by a few sentences, simply change your font size down one number and this should help. If you run over by a paragraph, you need to cut out some information.
On a second page, answer the following questions about your article:
Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the research design, by providing specific evidence and examples from the article to support your evaluation of these strengths and weaknesses. Answers to this question will vary depending on the type of research that was conducted. Was the design experimental, correlational, longitudinal, etc.? Review your Chapter 1 textbook discussion of research design issues. In addition, do the results seem to make sense, was it well-written, were the conclusions clear, etc.?
Give examples of ethical principles followed and the page number they were noted on in the article. Were participants given informed consent? Was a debriefing offered? (If no ethical principles were specifically noted in the article, then simply note that there were no ethical procedures noted.) If no ethical principles are mentioned, discuss if they were necessary and what procedures you would have used, if any.
Are there alternative explanations for the results? Did the author(s) describe any limitations or weakness of the study? If not, what do you think were the limitations or weakness of the study?
**Your critique should be at least 250 words, or one double-spaced page!**
