Topics
1. Discuss the experience of plague or pandemic. Draw on course readings, research and personal experience (or the experience of others) to illustrate a thesis, e.g.:
Plague is an irreparable trauma
Plague is a life-altering experience
Plague is a world-changing opportunity
2. Discuss the Pygmalion story in its original form (Ovid’s Metamorphoses) and its subsequent re-imaginings (Vertigo, The Shape of Things, The Bride of Frankenstein). You can also consider alternative versions and revisions of the tale (Frankenstein, Pygmalion, My Fair Lady, She’s All That, Pretty Woman, Ruby Sparks, Ex Machina).
Draw on course readings, research and personal experience (or the experience of others) to illustrate a thesis, e.g.:
Love / Art / Truth Beauty is subjective (relative, contextual, perspectival).
Love / Art / Truth/ Beauty is objective (absolute, invariable, singular).
Idealization / Idolization is antithetical to loving a “real” woman / man / person.
People should treat their love objects as “subjects,” that is, not as instruments of their own fulfillment and pleasure (boy toys, playthings), nor as measures of their own value or success (“trophy” partners). Love demands we see the beloved “as is” and that we love them with flaws (not despite them).
Art should represent reality. Art should improve on reality.
The artist has a responsibility to society, to herself, to art, itself.
Art / Science / Truth cannot be immoral.
In general, your paper should argue logically, that is from Logos.
Your paper should also contain
A paragraph or section that argues pathetically, that is from Pathos
A paragraph or section that argues ethically, that is from Ethos
