When completing this assignment please consider the concept of “proportionality”, the idea that the seriousness of the punishment should match the seriousness of the crime. It is also important to point out that for most of the blue-collar crimes discussed in this chapter there is no physical harm to the victim.
For this assignment, complete the following:
(1) Why do you think white-collar criminals often receive more lenient treatment (e.g., less likely to go to prison) by the justice system compared to blue-collar offenders.
(2) What type of control strategies, compliance or deterrence, do you believe would be most effective in controlling white-collar crime? Compliance strategies rely on cooperation and self-policing from institutional actors and are based on the notion that economic sanctions and civil penalties, from regulatory agencies rather than the criminal justice system, will deter white-collar crime. Deterrence strategies rely on law enforcement to actively detect criminal violations, identify those responsible, and punish offenders using the criminal justice system.
