The “EBM Search Strategy Directions” is only there if you need it. I’m sure you know how to look for sources.
THE OBJECTIVE FOR THIS PAPER IS TO GENERATE A LIST OF REFERENCES ONLY! I don’t need to write any part of the paper just yet. However, it will have to be completed by the end of the semester. I just don’t know how many pages will be required just yet. Once I get that information, I’ll request it as well at that time.
Important note: The references must be in AMA format.
From the instructor:
“Good resources are primary literature, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and other resources like DynaMed and UpToDate.
For your search strategy and results, go to a website like PubMed.gov to conduct your search.
Start with “XYZ disease” and add to search box.
Then enter “another name for XYZ disease” and add to search box using the OR operand.
Then enter “experimental treatment term” and add to search box using the AND operand.
Then enter “standard treatment term” and add to search box using the AND operand.
Then enter “outcome of interest term” and add to search box using the AND operand.
Then enter “population of interest term” and add to the search box using the AND operand.
This covers all of the elements of a typical PICO question.
You may find it helpful to use the OR operand more frequently for additional names for your disease of interest.
Then click on search to see how many articles that you find.
Using the filters on the left of the screen, you can limit the retrieval of articles by:
age – the population that you are interested in evaluating: this could be younger adults, middle aged adults, adults 65+
language – English (unless you are fluent in other languages)
others if appropriate
You could also limit the articles to the ones published over the past 10 years or so.
The object is to get some relevant articles (preferably <100) that you could read the abstracts or summaries rapidly to determine if they are relevant to what you are doing.
Submit your selected references that you will use to write your paper. This could change as you discover other articles. For other projects, it may be wise to search multiple databases (TRIP, CINAHL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews).”
