Purpose and Goals <

We encounter persuasive messages on a daily basis, some being more obvious than others. The purpose of this assignment is to remove ourselves from the role of potential audience to the role of analyst in an effort to better understand exactly how a message functions rhetorically and its possible implications. By completing this assignment, you will gain experience selecting a specific artifact appropriate for analysis, unpacking the approaches common in certain genres and modes of communication, and discussing both academic and public implications of persuasion. <

Assignment Description <

You will need to compose a three page (approx. 750 word) textual analysis. You have the opportunity to select your own artifact to analyze for this project, but your choice must fit within the following parameters: <

Written text: Must not exceed 1,000 words in length<
Videos: Must not exceed 5 minutes in length<
Songs: Must not exceed 5 minutes in length<
Successful final drafts will include/do the following: <

Identify the artifact’s purpose/argument and intended audience<
Discuss two-three ways the artifact attempts to persuade the intended audience through logos, pathos, and/or ethos<
Determine and discuss if the attempts at persuasion were successful for the intended audience<
Demonstrate a command of grammar and mechanics <
Demonstrate a command of MLA page formatting <

You will also need to include a brief (approx. 150 words) writing reflection. In your reflection, you will need to answer/address the following questions: <

There is no official rough draft due for this assignment. Instead, you will develop your ideas and receive feedback from both myself and your peers in class using Eli Review Writing, Review, and Revision tasks. <
