Geometry
You have volunteered to be part of a team that will build a new home for a needy family in your area. Your team’s task is to calculate some of the construction costs involved in building this home. Please go to your assigned group discussion board to begin the project.
The first group member to post in your group discussion board gets to pick the floor plan for the home following these guidelines:
Ranch style home (mostly rectangular)
At least three bedrooms
Includes the dimensions of each room
Copy and paste it to the discussion board along with the URL.
Post 1: Initial Response
Once the floor plan is chosen, each group member (including the student who posted the floor plan) will pick one of the following costs and post the results. In your post, be sure to:
Include all area/perimeter and cost calculations.
Round all dimensions in the floor plans to the nearest foot.
Inform your fellow group members of the cost you will work on by typing it in the subject line of your post.
Cost Options:
Bedroom Flooring: Calculate the floor area of all the bedrooms in the home based on the floor plans (rounded to the nearest foot). Explore bedroom flooring options online. Choose one flooring to use in all the bedrooms and calculate the total cost of flooring. Include the URL for your flooring choice in your post.
Main Living Area Flooring: Calculate the floor area of the main living areas (kitchen, dining room, living room/great room) in the home based on the floor plans (rounded to the nearest foot). Explore flooring options online. Choose one flooring to use in all the main living areas and calculate the total cost of flooring. Include the URL for your flooring choice in your post.
Bedroom Walls: Calculate the area of the four walls of all the bedrooms in the home based on the floor plans (standard ceiling height is 8’ unless otherwise noted – round answers to the nearest foot). Explore drywall or paint options online. Calculate the total cost of drywalling or painting (pretend you are drywalling/painting all four walls in their entirety ignoring windows, doors, closets, or other gaps that would not be drywalled or painted). Include the URL for your drywall/paint choice in your post.

Include the URL for your drywall/paint choice in your post.
Bedroom Crown Molding: Calculate the perimeter of the four walls of all the bedrooms in the home based on the floor plans. Explore crown molding options online and calculate the total cost of molding. Include the URL for your crown molding choice in your post.

Explore crown molding options online and calculate the total cost of molding. Include the URL for your crown molding choice in your post.
Exterior Gutters: Add 2 feet in all directions to the outside dimensions of the home to account for a 2 feet overhang of the roof (you may hav
to do some estimating if the floor plans do not include all dimensions). Calculate the outside perimeter of the roof including the 2-foot extension. Explore gutter options online and calculate the total cost (assume all four sides of the house are going to have gutters – ignore downspouts). Include the URL for your gutter choice in your post.
Roofing Materials: Add 2 feet in all directions to the outside dimensions of the home to account for 2 feet of overhang of the roof (you may have to do some estimating if the floor plans do not include all dimensions). Calculate the area of the entire home using the outside dimensions including the 2-foot extension. For this calculation, you will assume a simple gable roof with a 4/12 pitch. Multiply your area calculation by 1.054 to determine the actual area of the roof. Explore roofing options online and calculate the total cost. Include the URL for your roofing choice in your post.
