Students will write three 5-page response papers over three separate course read

Students will write three 5-page response papers over three separate course readings. Students must use direct quotes from the book/readings to support their discussion. The response papers are meant to reflect upon your ability to grasp the course material and should clearly summarize, analyze and evaluate the argument of the text. Well-written response papers will not only summarize the reading but analyze the argument and connect the findings to other course material.
(Worth 30% of final grade; each paper worth 10%)
Helpful tips:
1) Remember, response papers are meant to be your “response,” i.e. your own analysis and reflection on the text/readings.
2) Focus on important passages/quotes and spend time un-packing the significance of the text within your response paper. If you do not use quotes from the books/readings or concepts from class your grade automatically starts at a C (Average).
3) When feasible, connect the book/readings to your own experiences to exemplify your understanding of the text.
4) Less than 20% of your paper should consist of quoted material, anything more than 20% will result in a grade deduction and 50% or more is an automatic 0. (TurnItInoriginality report displayed upon submission. Students can re-submit their paper up to 3 times before the due date.)

Student discusses many of the main points of the reading. Good
Student discusses all of the main themes of the reading. Excellent
Analyze
Student only summarizes and does not provide an analysis of the reading. Average
Student provides a minimal amount of analysis as to the content of the reading in relation to class discussion, lecture and the student’s own insight. Good
Student provides a well-thought out analysis of the reading tying the information to class discussion and lecture. Student makes connection to previous readings and provides deep insight on the main ideas and themes of the reading. Excellent
Evaluate
Student only summarizes and analyzes the reading and does not provide an evaluation. Average
Student provides a brief assessment of the author(s) ideas/thoughts reflected in the
reading. Good
Student provides an in-depth analysis of the author(s) main points and ideas. Student will reflect on the content of the reading and evaluate whether or not the reading is a worthy contribution to the field of sociological theory. Excellent
