Specific Instructions for this Participation Post:
Since you are analyzing just a single sentence each for two peers, take the time to answer these four questions to help each peer ensure their enthymeme is clear, complete, and logically sound:
Is the assertion indeed arguable, and does it answer the intended question-at-issue (QAI)? If so, then note it and offer an opposing claim that would pose a challenge to this assertion as a likely counterargument. If not, then offer suggestions regarding how the assertion could be shifted to become clearly contentious and/or more focused on the QAI.
Do these reasons earn this enthymeme? If an essay provided analyses to support just these reasons, would it entirely convince you that the assertion is reasonable and just? If so, indicate what kind of support you would anticipate finding in this essay to bolster the reasons. If not, explain what else could be added to the reasons, and essay, to persuade you.
Check the logic of the enthymeme. a) Is there a clear shared term linking the assertion with the reason clause? If so, indicate what it is. If not, suggest how this enthymeme could be revised to connect the main ideas. b) Does the reason clause do more than just repeat the assertion? If so, pinpoint the new content offered by the reasons. If not, then suggest some additions.
Is the writing clear and concise? If the enthymeme needs revision for clarity and/or accuracy, then offer editing suggestions. If not, then paraphrase the enthymeme entirely in your own words as you might explain it to a friend who is not quite understanding. (This recap need not be in the form of another enthymeme.)
Reference specifics from each enthymeme as you analyze its strengths and weaknesses. Submit both of your peer reviews here for grading AND post them on the relevant Discussion Board for each peer to read.
