Sometimes, without considering it carefully, people are likely to believe the freedoms outlined in the Bill of Rights are absolute rights. However, while the purpose of the Bill of Rights has the intended purpose of securing political liberty against government power, the courts have identified some limitations in some of those liberties such as freedom of speech.
For this reflection:
Reflect on the issue of free speech and address the following: what is free speech and what kinds of speech are protected? What kinds of speech have been viewed as not protected by the courts? Are the reasons given for protection compelling? One area where there has been considerable controversy over protected speech is hate speech. What constitutes hate speech and should hate speech be protected (tolerated)?
