Six page research essay written as a proposal with four sources as references responding to
the following prompt:
The local governance board in your community is holding a promotion to generate ideas for
civic improvement. You are asked to write a proposal in your role as a citizen who is
interested in the outcomes of this promotion.
Your suggestion could be anything from working together on a community project at a park,
holding a special election for a cause, promoting your community to a corporation considering
a move to your town, or improving roads, water quality, laying cable for improved internet
connection.
Your suggestion needs to change some factor affected by community living and use of
community property that can be measured in terms of quality and/or quantity. First, it will be
measured by giving evidence of why and how it is in need, and, secondly, by following your
suggestion, why and how you expect improvement.
Your paper will need to include evidence as data showing before and after figures on the
quality and/or quantity of the factor’s improvement.
Chosen by members of the board, the best proposals will be read by the writers at a weekly
meeting of the governance board open to the public.
Use sources to support your suggestion by showing need for an improvement and how you
expect the improvement to be demonstrated. You can also use sources to support your
position as credible witnesses to your opinion. You can write your proposal from your role as a
citizen in the community, from your work role, as a parent, from your faith community; it is

up to you how you choose to write this work. You can use rhetorical devices as cause and
effect, persuasion, or process depending on your suggestion. All is to be formatted in APA
style as your final paper.
