Role Of Research And Research Process For
Advanced Registered Nurses
Review the evidence-based practice project ideas you
described in Topic 5 DQ 1. Based on your initial ideas, what types of scholarly
nursing research (such as quantitative or qualitative research, peer-reviewed
resources, etc.) would be required to further investigate the issue? Select an
article related to your topic. Identify the criteria you would use based on the
CRAAP test to evaluate the appropriateness of the research. Why is it important
to select research that meets these criteria? Evaluate the “CRAAP
Test” article from the New Jersey Institute of Technology Library,
located in the topic Resources. Explain the five criteria as they relate to
your selected article.
Topic 5 DQ 1
During this program, you will complete an
evidence-based practice project addressing a problem, issue, or concern in your
specialty area of professional practice. Consider an area in your specialty
that you believe needs improvement. Which nursing theories could you apply to
this problem? Why is this the best theory?
Short-term care is
any intervention or caregiving that avails medical assistance to post-surgery
patients, patients undergoing recovery, or patients under family care where the
relatives cannot attend to them (Owens et al., 2018). Palliative care patients
also require short-term care when they experience increased pain and other
symptoms. Despite its importance, this care has become problematic. This paper
examines this issue and the application of nursing theories to address it.
Delivering
short-term care becomes problematic due to its limited time for the interaction
between the nurse and patient (Owens et al., 2018). This situation limits the
ability of the nurse to offer effective interventions since some may be
symptoms overlooked, resulting in halfway correct or completely wrong decisions.
Therefore, patients’ outcomes are affected due to a lack of preliminary
observations that help determine the right intervention at the time of care
delivery.
Two
nursing theories can help solve these issues: Dorothy Orem’s self-care and
Patricia Benner’s Novice to Expert. The latter states that nursing practice
requires long-term exposure to patients to gain clinical experience (Smith,
2019). Such nurses can be involved with patients and families much easier hence
best suited to offer short-term care since they can make more informed choices.
Orem’s theory can help deal with challenges in short-term care by assisting
patients in learning how to take care of their health by adopting certain
activities and practices (Smith, 2019). This process will assist nurses with
limited clinical experience in delivering effective interventions due to
patients’ involvement. This theory is best because it will encourage
collaboration between the patient and the nurse and reduce clinical errors in
care delivery.
