In
the field of counselling and psychology when looking towards the future of the disciplines,
there is often a call for newer and better research strategies. Well-being needs
to be studied with multiple measurement instruments and newer research
strategies that offer a better fit with the complexities of human behaviour.
People are inherently complex and to have an adequate psychological
understanding requires equally complex tools of investigation. In general, many scientists today agree
that using multiple and new research strategies is necessary.
There is a movement towards more balanced, diverse and inclusive psychological
research designs where one approach is not privileged over the other. This movement
advocates for researchers to start exploring and engaging in research across
the epistemological spectrum as both quantitative and qualitative approaches
have value in their own right. More broadly, a growing number of investigators
have insisted that qualitative studies must be used more fully in developing
meaningful conceptions of healthy individual and group functioning. In their
view, using only high-powered statistical analyses of psychological surveys is insufficient. For example, ——- stated that “qualitative approaches are ideal for
