The crucial role of the public in deterring child exploitation has been emphasized in
research. According to Hunn et al.’s (2020) study, there continues to be a significant rise in society
for child exploitation material (CEM). Further, the authors argue that there continue to be limited
policy measures aimed at deterring initial or onset offenders who interact with CEM material on
the internet (Hunn et al., 2020). This research source is beneficial to the present research as it
highlights different social perceptions of CEM and the different levels of criminal offenders. The
study by Laird et al. (2020) showcases the various factors that may expose children to sexual
exploitation. According to the authors, the main risk factors include a history of posttraumatic
stress disorder, having multiple sexual partners, risky sexual behavior, and traumatic childhood
experiences (Laird et al., 2020). Further, the study by Mason-Jones & Loggie (2020) highlights
that health professionals have an important role in detecting and preventing child sexual
exploitation. According to the authors, most healthcare professionals lack the needed
communication skills, legal knowledge, and child sexual exploitation understanding to help in
dealing with the vice effectively (Mason-Jones & Loggie, 2020). Therefore, this study will benefit
the present research by providing the existing challenges to successfully eliminating the different
forms of child exploitation.
Importantly, these studies are vital to understanding the different interventions and
prevention measures needed to treat, screen, and assess child exploitation victims. According to
Laird et al. (2020), it is important for prevention measures to integrate the different risk factors for
children when screening them to ensure a more comprehensive understanding of the child’s
situation and treatment approaches. Similarly, Mason-Jones & Loggie (2020) note that healthcare
professionals must strive to understand their role in preventing childhood exploitation by training
and educating themselves on crucial risk factors to ensure they use effective treatment approaches
for each case.

identify related articles. The first article (Holt, Cale, Leclerc & Drew, 2020) is relevant to the
subject since it discusses the significance of non-governmental groups working with law
enforcement to improve laws that hold internet criminals responsible. The second article, (Kloess,
Woodhams, Hamilton-Giachrisis, 2021), discussed the process whereby law enforcement identifies
and analyzes child sexual exploitation material. The final article by Russel (2018), discussed the
impact of child exploitation on spiritual development. According to Russel, (2018), trauma to this
nature impairs spiritual growth.
