Research, select and review a “cold case” (10 years or older) which was solved based on DNA evidence. Among the many sources for identifying cold cases for your review and report are news headlines, forensic television shows, and the Innocence Project’s website (innocenceproject.org). You should reference and cite at least two different sources. Your written report must answer the following questions:
What is a summary of the case?
Who was victimized and who was the offender(s).
What happened?
What was the offense (i.e. type of offense, such as murder, robbery, etc.)?
Where did the offense occur (i.e. setting, crime scene, etc.)?
When did the offense occur (i.e. how long ago, season, climate conditions, etc.)?
How was DNA evidence used in the investigation?
From Victim: Describe type of DNA collected (i.e. blood, saliva, etc.); and sample source (i.e. clothing, fingernails, etc.).
From Offender: Describe type of DNA collected (i.e. saliva, skin cells, etc.); and sample source (i.e. cigarette butt, tissue, etc.).
Describe challenges in DNA collection, testing or analyses that precluded earlier detection of actual offender. Were there any legal or ethical issues?
Describe case breakthrough including improved technology, DNA testing, analyses or matching processes that contributed to solving the case.
