Assessment of Asthma Control in Children less than 5 (153-155)
The goal of asthma management in children fewer than five is just like in the grown-up population. The final objective is to accomplish the correct management of symptoms and make sure that children’s daily routine is not conceded. Also, it is vital to reduce the risk of asthma flare-ups, any compromised lung functionality, and any side effect of medication. A true partnership between the healthcare provider and parent/caregiver is essential to achieving this asthma management goal. All these involve proper planning, like evaluating the patient’s full condition, amending the treatment plan, and revising the response if there is any side effect. Also, it equally involves providing pertinent information, training, and encouragement to the family or caregiver (“Global strategy for asthma management and prevention,” 2021 p. 153).
The main issue here is that the control of asthma in children under five years is challenging. Wheezing can occur in this age group without asthma. Also, performing any lung function test to confirm asthma in this age group is very challenging. Another reason is that symptoms control reports come from parents or caregivers for children less than five years old. Without clear-cut questions, they may not notice how many times their child has experienced the symptoms. It’s hard for them to know the meaning of uncontrolled asthma (“Global strategy for asthma management and prevention,” 2021 p. 153).
The development of technology and the increasing interest in electronic health records have led various organizations to introduce their own management guidelines. One such organization is Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA). It offers a stepwise-customized questionnaire approach to guide the provider and caregiver to be on track for the proper management for the patient under 5.  It includes asthma symptom control, which measures the magnitude to which asthma indicators are controlled with or without treatment. It usually has two major factors. First, current symptom control means what the asthma status is in the last four weeks? Second, future risk means how asthma might affect them in the future (“Global strategy for asthma management and prevention,” 2021 p. 153).
I found this article informative. As I am a mom whose son had childhood asthma, these resources were not conveniently available. I believe that it will be beneficial for the parents whose children have asthma if they have proper guidelines available
