QAR is a research-based method and language framework developed by Taffy Raphael (1986) for enhancing student’s ability to talk about and answer comprehension questions. Applicable to both literary and informational texts, QAR helps students understand that answers come from one of two main courses of information: In the Text and In My Head. (Raphael and Au 2005)
In this sample lesson model, sample text is used to represent a selection at student’s independent reading level. The same model can be adapted and used to enhance comprehension instruction for literary or informational text in any commercial reading or content-area program-as long as the text is at the appropriate level
This is a 2 part assignment.
Part 1
Use the attached 3-4 grade reading passage “Albert Einstein Asks a Question” to complete the Question-Answer Relationships Chart (QAR) following the steps below as if you were a 3rd or 4th grade student.
1. Read aloud paragraphs 3 and 4 of Albert Einstein Asks.pdf Download Albert Einstein Asks.pdf . Then ask: What is Einstein’s most famous theory? Ask: What types of experiments do scientists do? Ask: Based on Einstein’s simple description of relativity, can you provide a similar example of relativity in your life? How did Einstein travel around Princeton , New Jersey? Think about the questions asked above as you review the chart below.

Part 2
1.You will need the following: A reading passage of your choice from the following areas: Social studies, Math (word problem), informational text passage, literacy text passage. This means that you will need to have a total of 3 text passages and 1 word problem for you to use the QAR graph with. (I will not provide these passages for you, you will need to secure them on your own)
2.You will need to develop at least 4 questions for students to answer for each passage, and the word problem, using the QAR graph. Select 2 of your reading passages and QAR graphs to have a student(s) complete. If you are not currently in the classroom, you can complete the activity with a sibling, your child, or a neighbor’s child.
Compile your passages and completed graphs into one document and submit as your completed assignment.
