Purpose: For your third graded assignment you will write a cause and effect essay, also called a causal analysis. A cause and effect essay explains the reason behind something happening. When you write a cause and effect essay, you should explain the reason or cause for what is happening. Then explain what happens as a result or effect of these causes. When writing about causes ask why does X happen? When writing about effects ask when X happens, what is the outcome?
Objectives: After completing this assignment, students should be able to:

Develop and organize ideas to support an explicit thesis statement
Integrate research evidence smoothly in the essay
Edit to correct errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling and sentence structure
Document sources using MLA Format for in-text citations and Works Cited page.

(For example, you could find a newspaper article and an article in a journal.) You can choose to quote, summarize, or paraphrase any information taken from these sources. In-text Citations: MLA Format must be used for in-text citations (a brief form of the reference that you include in your essay that provides information to identify the source on the Works Cited page). MLA in-text citation style uses the author’s last name and the page number from which the quotation, or paraphrase is taken, for example: (Smith 163). If the source does not use page numbers, you can use paragraph number in the parenthetical citation: (Smith, par. 2).
Structure & Organization:
Introduction: Provide background information on the topic. Engage the reader by focusing on the cause, which is COVID-19 and show the link between the cause and the effects. The introduction should give the reader a sense of why you chose the topic and your general understanding of the topic. The thesis should specifically identify the topic, the cause, and the three major effects that you will focus on in your essay.
Body Paragraphs: Each body paragraph should focus on ONE major effect related to the cause and the specific area you chose to write your essay on.
Paragraph 1: The topic sentence should identify the first effect related to the specific area you have chosen. Show the link between the cause and the effect. Supporting sentences should explain and discuss this effect and provide evidence from your research to support your views.
Paragraph 2: The topic sentence should identify the second effect related to the specific area you chose to write your essay on. Show the link between the cause and the effect. Supporting sentences should explain and discuss this effect and provide evidence from your research to support your views.
Paragraph 3: The topic sentence should identify the third effect related to the specific area you chose to write your essay on. Show the link between the cause and the effect. Supporting sentences should explain and discuss this effect and provide evidence from your research to support your views.
Conclusion: Restate your thesis and leave the reader with an important lesson or message related to the topic. Do not summarize or repeat information from the body paragraphs.
