Prompt: Many of the contemporary artists we have studied thus far share in common a shift away from the traditional rendering of figures (bodies) in their artwork. While naturalistically rendered bodies are rarely seen, the body is referenced in a number of innovative ways: we see abstracted portraits, body fragments, an interest in artists’ gestures, artworks created for spectators’ bodily interactions, the artist’s body used as his/her medium, and so on. For this paper, select four artworks that reflect four different ways in which the body has been accounted for in contemporary art. Each must be representative of a different style/movement. Describe each artwork in some detail and analyze its formal properties and content with an emphasis on the novel approach to representing or using the body. Explain how each artwork is exemplary of the style/movement identified and how it reflects on the specific context in which it was created (i.e. responding to the conditions of life in the decades following World War II).
Artwork selection: Select the four artworks thoughtfully. The artworks chosen must be representative of four different artistic styles/movements and each must be taken from a chapter/lecture PowerPoint posted to a different weekly module (select a total of four artworks from four different weeks). Styles/movements we have studied include Abstract Expressionism, Postwar European Figuration and Abstraction (including Art Brut and Art Informel), New Realism, Fluxus, Assemblage, Happenings, Pop Art, Op Art, Kineticism, Minimalism, and Conceptualism. Properly identify each artwork discussed (include the title, artist, and date). Be sure your discussion of each artwork addresses the formal properties and relevant style/movement, subject matter, and the context in which it was created.
References: Your paper should expand upon information found in the textbooks and course assignments (successful papers will not include text copied and pasted from course assignments, but instead consist of new text generated for this assignment). You must consult at least two credible sources, in addition to your textbooks. Please only reference the following sources: books, scholarly articles, museum websites, and Khan Academy. If you quote, please keep it to a minimum and include proper citations in MLA or The Chicago Manual of Style format. Include a bibliography at the end of your paper.
Formatting guidelines: Your paper must be at least 4 full pages of text (and no longer than 5 full pages) and contain an introduction with a strong thesis statement, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. It is to be typed in Times New Roman 12-point font and double-spaced, with one-inch margins. Proofread your work for typos and grammatical errors. You do not need to upload reproductions of the artworks.
