The effectiveness and functionality of an organization is based on how well structured the policies and guidelines that are in place. These policies and guidelines need to be explained and enforced by a well-informed manager or supervisor. This discussion post will describe the organizational structure and culture of the medical surgical floor that I work on.
The structure that fits my organization is service line structure. The benefits of working in a service line structure is that it gives me the opportunity to work with individuals that are similar in skillset, knowledge, and scope of practice. The collaborative effort that is exercised among the nurses on my floor greatly impacts patient health and satisfaction. The hospital that I work for is one of the largest in the greater Cleveland area and has various departments and specialties that benefit from a service line structured system. The large number of people being serviced within the organization requires immediate intervention that involves various disciplines such as nursing, pharmacy, and diagnostic imaging (Sullivan, 2018).
The practice model utilized in my organization is an integral part of the identity of the organization. The service line model works well within my organization because it constantly evolves with the rapid demands of patient care which in turn increases patient satisfaction by operating as a group of healthcare professionals that have established relationships rather than simply workers following rules (Louis et al., 2019).
In conclusion, evidence-based practice is integrated into the practice model by utilizing research methods that can improve policy integration such as utilizing Lewin’s theory of change to introduce policies to improve workplace culture by offering in service training on culturally competent care. Understanding the cultural backgrounds and behaviors of co-workers and the patient population can improve relationships that will benefit all parties involved.
