Professor and class,
The issue I chose to address is that 92% of Florida nursing centers are reporting a shortage of nursing staff members (Florida Health Care Association, 2021). This survey also included potential fixes for the shortage which included higher pay incentives to help retain and recruit nurses which can be applied to a variety of facilities all over the country. The population affected in this instance is the elderly living within the nursing homes of Florida because they are not receiving the best care possible due to the shortage of nurses. Possible strategies for nurses to have the greatest impact would include reaching out to legislators as well as hospital administrators and voice the current struggles and issues they are facing. When bringing up issues such as this, it is good to include possible solutions which could include bonuses, higher pay incentives, or flexible scheduling to facilitate a better working environment and bring incentive for nurses to fill to present voids.
Dear Gov. DeSantis,
I am writing you today to provide you some of my firsthand experience of the current nursing shortage within our state and to also provide you with a potential solution to help.  With the Florida House Bill 381 that was put into effect, Florida was able to keep the current nursing shortage from getting worse by continuing to provide nursing programs to conduct and produce registered nurses through associate programs. This was a band aid fix that only prevented the shortage from an explosive increase, but there is still much work to be done. I would like to propose some form of legislation that can provide state and/or federal funding to help incentivize nurses for getting and retaining jobs in all types of facilities, especially the nursing homes. With 92% of nursing homes across the state saying they are experiencing a nursing shortage that is affecting their care, this is a big problem that cannot continue to be overlooked as the safety of Floridians is at a major risk. With a projected 114,000 RN positions needing to be filled between now and 2023 (FHCA, 2021), there is a major opportunity for the leaders of the state of Florida to get in front of this disaster before it becomes irreparable. I thank you in advance for your support and look forward to seeing what solutions come to assist the nurses of Florida.
