School Nursing
When researching this topic for this week’s discussion post, I used the school district I live within. I currently reside within the Mansfield Texas School District. My grandchildren attend Junior High School. I have always been a Labor and Delivery nurse and have never desired to be a school nurse. I have always thought of school nursing as a pretty dull job. I discovered that all of the many schools within our district employ a full-time registered RN. There are many duties that the school nurse is responsible for and including the following: CPR, first aide, ability to use an AED, seizure training, ability to care for children with diabetes, and also children with severe food allergies (MISD, 2021). In our district, the nurses can also provide immediate emergency treatment until paramedics can arrive at the scene. The nurse conducts mandatory state health screenings that also include hearing and vision (MISD, 2021). I had no idea that the school nurse also provided health assessments for the staff and the students. They also develop student Individual Health Care Plans or IHP’s. The school nurses also rotate on sitting on the school district’s School Health Advisory Committee or SHAC (MISD, 2021). The SHAC is comprised of the school RN’s but also has members of the community, students, parents, and school staff to encourage optimal health to optimize student health and maximize every student’s educational opportunities.
My current district is quite large and busses students from the surrounding cities of South Arlington and some parts of South Grand Prairie. When the school nurses conduct the state-mandated health screenings, the school nurse helps with the early detection of health issues and assists the student to maximize their learning opportunities (MISD, 2021). Mansfield ISD prides itself in a well-run health screening program that runs smoothly and quickly, acceptable to parents, students, and staff alike. These screenings are done yearly when the hearing and vision screenings are conducted(MISD, 2021). Part of the SHAC function is to have coordinated school health programs. Some of these programs within the Mansfield ISD district are family and community programs, nutrition services, physical education, health education, psychological counseling, and social services. They also offer health services and health promotion for school staff, above and beyond the students. When it comes to communicable diseases, the school nurse helps notify the Department of Health if students or staff have increased absences related to illnesses that include the COVID 19 virus (MISD, 2021).

School Nurses construct a base for Student Health and Education. There is a strong relationship between health and education. That is why the role of school nurses is essential in collaborating with students, the school community, families, the health care community, the community at large, and government agencies so that students can feel healthy, safe, and ready to learn. School nurse duties go beyond everyday minor health issues; there is much more to educating children than lessons, homework, and tests. Students are blessed to have the infrastructure that ensures their wellness.
Situated in the Central Pennsylvania East Pennsboro school district, there are over 8,000 students, spread over one high school, one middle school, and two elementary schools. Healthcare services are provided by four nurses, each one holding one side of the school district. The school district goes beyond typical health issues, such as pupil or student complaints of a stomach ache or a mild fever, and builds a relationship based on mutual trust and respect. They play a crucial role in controlling behavior issues and talking to students who suffer from various mental problems.
I talked to one of the aid nurses about COVID how it affected their job and relationship with the students; she stated it might be chaotic, but they still manage to provide the appropriate help and support to all the students throughout the district. Besides providing support and assessing health conditions such as heart issues and diabetes, they also support students who suffer from behavioral problems. Through collaboration with the parents, teachers, and administration, school nurses try to provide the appropriate care plan for all the students, especially those having difficulties balancing their family life and school. Not only manage the children’s health conditions such as diabetes. I gathered multiple resources and support for the students through the school district website, such as health centers that offer low-cost or free health care and immunizations. Even information about bed bugs and lice is on that website.
Furthermore, the school district collaborates and supports the community by involving the students and their families in many programs, such as the Panther Pack program, where the school helps low-income families with food and clothes, especially during the wintertime. Also, a school has An Alumni Association, which is an organization established by alumni and attendees of a school, university, or college for the development of civic and social interests, with the main goal is to promote the camaraderie of its members and facilitate programs in support of the educational institutions and its students.
