PART 1
Sociology is frequently criticized as Eurocentric because it privileges perspectives from the Western hemisphere (Europe and the U.S.). What are the implications of this? What are the limitations of Eurocentrism to the field of sociology and its impact? Craft your best argument in a two or three double-spaced paragraph essay. Your submission should not exceed one double-spaced page.
PART 2
Each student will list and describe a sociological topic that they will investigate for a final project. For this homework assignment, students will delineate and describe the topic in a 5-7 sentence paragraph. They will answer the following questions:
TOPIC CHOSEN: ——> What is the influence of divorce on children?
1) What is the specific topic you plan to investigate? How does it connect to a larger topic (i.e., culture, socialization, family)
2) Why are they interested in the topic?
3) Why is the topic important to the field of sociology?
PART 3
Using the active reading skills handout, read chapters 3 and 4 before answering the following questions. Also, view the powerpoints and key terms, then incorporate three key terms to answer each of the following questions:
1) In thinking about the norms social that are a large part of your life, describe one that is important to your culture. (2-3 sentences)
2) What are three cultural items that you have been given by a friend, relative, or one that you acquired yourself that hold sentimental or important value to you? List them, and then state whether they are material, non-material (symbolic), or both. Describe them in as much detail as possible (2-3 sentences per each item).
3) What sanctions have you grown up with (that were administered by parents, extended family, teachers, preachers, priests, or others)? List two sanctions and describe the people who administered them — a parent, grandparent, teacher, preacher/priest, etc.). If you have children, do you administer the same sanctions to your children? If you are not yet a parent, do you think that you will administer the same sanctions you received if/when you become a parent? Why or why not? Provide details to support your answers (5-7 sentences).
PART 4
Ferris and Stein:
Ferris and Stein (2018) describe social agents as institutions, groups, and people that provide us with socialization through structured scenarios. In applying this to real life, can you think of one form of the media that has had a significant impact on you as a person (either good or bad)? Read chapter four, and review the PowerPoints and key terms, then complete this assignment in one or two paragraphs that have a minimum of five to seven sentences each. Include two or three key terms in your discussion and make sure they are in bold font.
