The classroom’s physical environment is the foundation for good classroom management. You can support positive behavior and learning by focusing on three areas: organizing classroom furniture, materials, and activities.
In just over 2 minutes, notice how many elements of what you have read, seen, and heard already fall into place for an effective physical arrangement.
Consider how the classroom at the middle and high school (e.g., for science, mathematics, English) levels follow these same elements, but look different.
Consider how you might incorporate some of these elements into your own classroom design.
If you are teaching in a virtual classroom, consider how you might incorporate some of these elements into the design of your virtual classroom.

Assignment Directions:
For this assignment, you will be focusing on the classroom management in a case study classroom. Using information from ONE of the self-assessments provided (See Blackboard), you will observe and reflect on the classroom management by completing the self-assessment. Using the data from the self-assessment, your observations/reflections, and content learned in Module 2 activities and readings, you will identify areas of strength and areas of need.  You will also consider recommendations (based on self-assessment data and Module 2 content) for how to improve classroom management in this setting.  You will write a paper that presents the information gathered in your classroom management analysis.  You will submit your completed self-assessment with the narrative paper.
There will be 4 sections to your paper, which are outlined below.
Section 1: Current Classroom Management
In this section, you will summarize the current classroom management in the case study classroom.  Your summary will include the following:
• Physical Arrangement including:
o A narrative description of the current physical arrangement in the classroom that includes the corresponding type of instruction that occurs in the classroom (e.g., small group, large group), the teachers’ capacity to circulate and see all students, the likelihood of smooth transitions for students to/from areas, and any other aspects significant to this specific classroom’s arrangement.
o A detailed drawing that indicates where desks, centers, materials, etc. are located.
• Schedule: A summary of what happens across the day or across the session (e.g., math class; 3rd period science). In your summary, tell approximately how long specific activities last so it’s clear how much time has been set aside for each activity.
• Behavior Management: A narrative summary to describe what the teachers use for behavior management. In this section, describe the following items. (Note: For any element that is not present in the classroom, be sure to clearly explain that it is not currently present):
o The current classroom rules, including what the rules are, if/how the classroom rules connect to the schoolwide rules (if any), and how the rules are taught to students
o If a classroom rules matrix is used for the classroom rules. If so, give a brief description of what activities or routines the matrix focuses on.
o Routines/procedures evident in the classroom
o How the teachers respond to appropriate, rule-following behavior, and if there is a continuum of responses (if so, what is the continuum?)
o How the teachers respond to inappropriate, rule-violating behavior, and if there is a continuum of responses (if so, what is the continuum?)
Section 2: Effectiveness of Current Classroom Management
In this section, you will use the data gathered from ONE completed self-assessment to identify strengths and areas of need for the current classroom management.  These strengths and areas of need can pertain to the physical arrangement, scheduling, or behavior management.  In this section, you will describe the following:
• Classroom management strengths: Using the data you acquired from the self-assessment, identify at least 3 strengths for this classroom. As you present each strength, tell what the strength is, what data from the self-assessment led you to identify this as a strength, and why this is an area of strength (you can draw upon content from your textbooks or Module 2, as well as examples from this classroom to support your claims).
• Classroom management areas of need: Using the data you acquired from the self-assessment, identify at least 3 areas of need for this classroom. As you present each area of need, tell what the area of need is, what data from the self-assessment led you to identify this as an areas of need, and why this is an area of need (you can draw upon content from your textbooks or Module 2, as well as examples from this classroom to support your claims).
*Note that you will submit your completed self-assessment with your assignment.
Section 3: Cultural Responsiveness of Current Classroom Management
In this section, you will summarize the culturally responsive classroom management elements present in this classroom. If there is no evidence of cultural responsiveness in the classroom management, be sure to explain that, too. After your summary, identify at least 1 strength and 1 area of need for this classroom in terms of culturally responsive classroom management. Note that although it is not required, the self-assessment provided in the Classroom Management Plan Resources folder in Blackboard (A Culturally Responsive Teaching Guide and Self-Assessment for Educators) may helpful in guiding your reflection and identifying what elements are present and areas of strength or need.
Section 4: Suggestions for Growth
In this section, you will provide suggestions for how classroom management can be improved for this classroom, including the following:
• Recommended Improvements: At least 3 substantive improvements that could be made to this classroom based on areas that have been identified as areas of need. Note that one substantive improvement must be related to cultural responsiveness.
• Rules Matrix: A classroom rules matrix for the class (including at least 3 rules and 3 activities/routines). Note that if this classroom does not currently have classroom rules, you will develop them for this matrix. Similarly, if the classroom has rules but they are ineffective or an area of need, you can develop rules that you think are better aligned with best practices learned in Module 2.
