Initial Prompt:
In order to be innovative and progressive, the Summerville health director would like to look into implementing a web-based reporting systems that would automatically populate a database. She understands this is a pilot project and would like to start with just two health outcomes from different areas: salmonellosis and childhood asthma. Currently, all cases of salmonella (a bacterial illness that causes acute diarrhea, fever and vomiting) are reported as part of the well established notifiable disease surveillance system via fax or Electronic Lab Reports (ELRs) by healthcare providers. Epidemiologists then conduct case investigations to generate hypotheses on possible causes of infection. As for childhood asthma, this surveillance system is in the planning phase and will hopefully be implemented in the next year. The purpose of this system is to identify the prevalence of self-reported childhood asthma, asthma related symptoms and asthma triggers and treatments. Based on a pre-defined sampling scheme, data will come from individual patients from different clinics and hospitals that will serve as sentinel sites. Reports will be submitted to the health department on a quarterly basis and surveillance will be conducted initially for 2 years. The health director is really excited by the web-based project and wants to collect a lot of information and has downloaded some questionnaires she found on the internet and she wants to incorporate this information into the new web-based systems. Select ONE questionnaire either Salmonella (Links to an external or Asthma Download Asthma(attached) and answer the following questions: 1) What are some data elements in the attached data collection tools that you would modify and/or add for web-based data collection methods? 2) Could certain elements be extracted from medical charts? 3) What are some of the benefits and limitations of web-based, automated data collection for this surveillance system? 4) Would you recommend the use of web-based reporting for this system?
