For this discussion, we will assess progress in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established in 2015 through the United Nations. Countries aspire to meet the 17 goals by 2030. We will also explore how specific companies impact the achievement of the SDGs. What role can and should companies play in helping meet the Sustainable Development Goals?
Visit the SDG Tracker (Links to an external site.) and select the SDG that you find most interesting or important. Review the data presented to track progress toward meeting the goal, and identify one specific exhibit from the site to include with your post (i.e., graph, chart, or infographic). You might also find it valuable to visit the UN’s Global Compact (Links to an external site.) to learn how companies can advance each of the SDGs.
Conduct additional research using other sources to analyze a company that impacts the SDG you selected positively or negatively. For instance, the company might be a startup commercializing an innovation to help address an SDG, or it can be a large multinational enterprise that historically contributed to the problems the SDG seeks to address. The company can be an established company or a startup, and it can be based anywhere in the world but must have some operations outside the United States. As part of your research, identify steps the company is taking to reduce its harm and/or enhance its positive impact. Evaluate the company’s strategy both in terms of implications for the company’s competitive advantage and profitability as well as for the achievement of the SDG.
For your initial post, respond to the following prompts after conducting additional research as needed:
1. Identify the Sustainable Development Goal you have decided to focus on, and include one insightful data exhibit (chart or graph) from the SDG Tracker website to help illustrate challenges in meeting the goal.
2. Analyze one company that impacts the SDG you have selected (positively and/or negatively). Explain how the company’s strategy and operations relate to the SDG. What is the company doing to reduce harm or create social value in relation to the SDG?
3. What lessons can we learn about sustainability and responsible business from the company you have selected for your case study?

• Continue the conversation with your classmates by replying to at least two of them by the end of the module.
o Initial posts will focus on a variety of countries or industry/company contexts. Use the discussion to build upon other students’ posts and to integrate and compare the topics.
o Your response must be respectful and constructive.
