Performance appraisal instruments are used to assess individuals in an organization. They may focus on current performance, potential for performance, and/or training and development needs. Performance appraisals identify areas for improvement as well as for recognition and reward. The key component of an effective performance appraisal instrument is its connection to the job tasks or duties that an individual is asked to perform. Effective instruments are able to measure the extent to which goals and objectives have been met.
Using your job analysis, you will create a list of behaviorally anchored performance standards that encompasses 1) fully successful, 2) intermediate, and 3) unsuccessful performance levels. You should first select one duty statement from your analysis. Next, brainstorm a list of performance examples for that duty statement. These examples should then be sorted into different levels of expected or observed performance. You may need to develop additional examples to ensure that all performance levels are included. Do this for all of the duty statements.
In addition, create a practical form to record information on the performance standards that could be used to conduct an effective performance appraisal. This form will not cover all of the responsibilities covered by the position, but should represent a good starting point for conducting a performance appraisal. Your form should also include instructions on how to administer the performance appraisal.
