Q1. Name two recent (2000 -2021) conflicts in the Middle East that are rooted in early 20th century Western colonial interventions in the Middle East. For each one of the two conflicts you named: What was the specific colonial decision that planted the seeds of conflict? Briefly describe it. (15 points)
Q2. For each one of the two conflicts you named: What was the colonial power’s goal in adopting the decision and how exactly did the decision lead to conflict? (15 points)
Part II Discuss Recent Middle Eastern Proxy Wars, by answering the following questions (Total 45 points):
Q3. Name two recent (2000-2021) civil conflicts in the Middle East that can be described as proxy wars and, for each, list the internal factions involved in the conflict. For each one of the two civil conflicts: describe the interest of foreign powers in the conflict and the interest of the domestic faction they support, describe one action that concretely illustrates this foreign power’s involvement in the conflict, and their goal in the conflict. (45 points)
Part III Discuss the prospects for democratization in the Middle East, by answering the following questions about Iran and Egypt (Total 25 points):
Q4. Briefly list one event per country that occurred in the 2009-2013 time frame that seemed to make democratization possible in each one of the two countries (Iran and Egypt). What happened to these attempts at democratization in each one of the two counties (Iran and Egypt)? Did they succeed or not? Describe. What was the cause of their success/ failure? (15 points)
Q5. Would you describe Iran and Egypt as democratic today? Substantiate your answer with two examples , based in media articles (one article per country, for a total of two) no older than two years, that you find in the approved sources below. Describe the examples for each country, followed by working link to the articles, in text. Also list the articles in your references. Articles should be different from those presented in the modules or materials assigned by the professor this semester and should respect source criteria listed in the instructions below. (10 points)
