Part 1: Develop, Describe and Justify a Search Strategy (900 words)
Develop a structured question using PICOt and a ‘keyword search strategy’, discussing how you found the best available research evidence and critically appraising an article you have found.
Pt 1 Stages
(Please use headings) Instructions Guidance
Introduction
(100 words) Briefly select and state what issue you have chosen to focus on and how it relates to the scenario You should explain how your issue relates to the scenario in your own words (don’t just repeat the scenario)
Formulating a question to search for relevant literature
(150 words) With reference to your reading:
• State why it is important to have a focussed search question
• Outline the two main approaches to nursing research that you might use to answer your question
• Explain when and why you would choose either approach
• Justify which approach you used
• State your draft question, based on the scenario. This is likely to be one paragraph in which you refer to the key approaches to nursing research.
You should reference from evidence-based practice books or articles to support this part (see core reading list but you should also try to explore further than this)
Justify means to give reasons why the approach you have chosen is the best (using evidence to support your reasons)
Use of a PICO(T) Framework to refine the question.
(150 words) With reference to the research question you established, explain:
• what PICOT is
• how it is generally used
• how you applied it in order to refine the question and identify the key words/synonyms In this section, you need to explicitly show the reader that you understand what each letter stands for and that you have applied them correctly. It should be clear whether you have used an intervention or non-intervention approach (in PICO, the letters I and C mean different things). You will need to explain the difference between these approaches.
You should also explain how you made sure that your question was neither too broad, nor too narrow.
Make sure you reference PICO(T) fully and accurately.
If you want, you can insert your application of PICOT as a table.
Establishing the search terms and techniques
(250 words) With reference to the tools below, describe and justify your search strategy:
• Boolean operators
• Truncation
• Wild Cards
• Limiters
• Databases
Include the results of your search strategy This is a description of your library search process that tells the reader how you amended and adapted your approach to get the results you wanted.
(see Stage 2 guidance for explanation of justify)
Include means insert a screenshot of your search results
Critical Appraisal of Article
(150 words) Critically appraise the paper you have chosen and establish its relevance to addressing your research question This is a paragraph that outlines how useful the paper you have chosen is.
You should use the ‘Six Critical Questions’ (or another similar tool) to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the research paper.
You do not need to refer to all six questions; select the ones which are most relevant to your analysis and your research question
Reflection
(100 words) Briefly discuss how effective your research strategy was and identify any areas for possible development.
Part 2: Demonstrate understanding and application of key concepts in nursing (1600 words)
Write an essay in response to the following question:
How does the concept of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and its related components influence a student nurse’s ability to provide care for a patient?
Use the following scenario to help you identify key issues and give examples in your discussion:
Pt 2 Stages Instructions Guidance
Intro (150 words)
1 paragraph • introduce the topic
• outline the aims of the essay
• define the key terms
• tell the reader how the essay will be organised For more information about introductions click here
Briefly give a definition of the main topic of the essay (EI); you will go into more detail in the next section
Explanation of EI
(500-600 words) Provide an explanation of EI and related concepts In this section you should describe EI in more detail, examine EI’s components (e.g. Emotion Management, Self-awareness and Emotional Labour) and show how they work together. You should then discuss how they relate to the field of nursing.
You should reference core texts from this module and your further reading (relevant literature) to support your definitions and discussion of EI and related terms.
Discussion of EI in relation to scenario
(500-600 words) Apply your understanding of the concepts to the scenario In this paragraph you should relate your analysis above to the scenario; how might the concepts you explored impact on your approach to the patient?
Aspects you may wish to refer to include:
• having an awareness of your own and others emotions
• regulating emotions and adapting behaviours when providing patient care
• the impact on your performance as a provider of care
• Use the papers that you found from your search.
• make a connection(s) between emotional intelligence (EI) and personal well-being and resilience
Cite relevant sources (these include text books, research articles, professional guidelines, models and frameworks) to support your points.
Conclusion and
Implications for Nursing Practice
(250 words) • Restate your aim briefly
• Briefly summarise what you have learned about the key concepts and how they might impact on a patient scenario.
• Outline how what you have learned might impact your professional practice in future.
