Paper Format: A simplified version of an article in the Summa by St. Thomas.
This is how it is done:
You begin with a QUESTION… Is scapegoating justified in an explosive situation if you can save hundreds of thousands of lives?
You make two or three POWERFUL ARGUMENTS (NOT opinions!) showing the opposite of what you will try to argue for in the end. These objections can be written short, sweet and two the point. You have to find the strongest argument the opposition will make to what you believe. Use an example to illustrate.
Then comes your central section – your RESPONDEO (‘I respond’): This is where you give your response to the opposition and put forth your most powerful arguments for why you hold this position. (Again! It is not an opinion paper!)
REPLIES: In light of your response you go back and reply to each of the objections raise before. E.g., ad 1 (to 1); ad 2 (to 2), etc.
