Briefly explain the issue in the case and what you are attempting to accomplish when writing this essay.
Thesis statements are of vital importance!
Paragraph 2) Explanation of Case
Explain the case with as much detail as necessary
Pretend that your audience has never read the case in question and has no knowledge of the case prior to your explanation.
Leave out details if they are not pertinent to your argument
Paragraph 3) Explanation of first ethical theory
Explain one ethical theory in detail
Ex: If you use deontology you need to explain the categorical imperative and be explicit in its description. Explain what deontology is.
Paragraph 4) Application of first ethical theory to case
How does this ethical theory explain how the case in question should be handled?
Use specific applications of the theory to the case. Ex: If you think what Crystal did in the case of Baby S44 was wrong explain how the categorical imperative backs up this argument. How did she violate deontology?
Paragraph 5) Counter Argument
List possible objections to your argument here. This should be an argument made as a retort to the one above. Ex: If you argued that Crystal violated the categorical imperative by not following through with the contract she signed (a clear violation of the categorical imperative) explain how a deontologist may value the duty of not aborting a fetus but then explain how she, then, should not have signed a contract agreeing to do so. The goal of the counter argument is to show another person’s perspective should be taken into consideration but that, ultimately, your argument was correct.
