Organization
• Begin by describing the space you would like to analyze, addressing the following questions (if
applicable): What kind of space have you selected (public park; workplace; a neighbourhood)?
What is the intended use of the space? How is the space actually used? What human, and morethan-human (plant life, animals) interactions take place at this space? Is there a (brief) history
that needs to be explained to understand this space? Based on your preliminary findings,
what issues related to environmental in/justice are at work in this space?
◦ Previous examples of spaces selected: Pioneer Village Station subway stop; Regent Park
neighbourhood; community garden; Church-Wellesley Village; Rouge Valley Park;
Aamjiwnaang First Nation and the Chemical Valley.
• Next, explain: 1) what theoretical tools you would like to use to analyze the space; and, 2) why
you have selected them: What concepts, ideas, or theories would you like to employ in your
analysis of the space? Why have you chosen these particular lenses? List specific texts, authors/
artists, ideas, or theories here.
◦ Possible theoretical lenses: racial capital; Indigenous resurgence; environmental racism;
queer ecologies; critical animal studies.
• Finally, briefly explain your preliminary ideas for your response: What format would you like
your response to take? Why have you selected this format? Why do you think it adequately
addresses issues of environmental in/justice?
◦ Possible responses: research paper with policy alternatives; photographic essay with
captions; short documentary (10 minute); curated list of songs/ films with choice
justification.
• Bibliography: On a separate page list 5 sources you plan to reference in your paper, this list
must include 2 sources assigned, or referenced in lecture. Sources must be correctly formatted.
