One puzzle in our current problems with COVID-19 is why some important political leaders, notably the Prime
Minister in England, Boris Johnson, our former President Donald Trump, and the President in Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, the Governor of Florida, Dion DeSantis, and the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, some of whom are highly educated people, have either intermittently or consistently rejected the advice of very knowledgeable scientists and experts in public health, for example Dr. Anthony Fauci. “In 2003, an Institute for Scientific Information study indicated that in the twenty year period from 1983 to 2002, Dr. Fauci was the 13th most-cited scientist among the 2.5 to 3 million authors in all disciplines throughout the world who published articles in scientific journals during that time frame. Dr. Fauci was the world’s 10th most-cited HIV/AIDS researcher in the period 1996-2006.” (from https://web.archive.org/web/20071030171118/http://www3.niaid.nih.gov/about/directors/biography/ )  He received a BA in Classics (Greek and Latin) from the College of the Holy Cross and an MD from Cornell University, where he was first in his class.
For now note that the fastest way to find scientific articles on COVID-19 is to check the National Library of Medicine.  You may enter LitCOVID at www.google.com or point your browser at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/research/coronavirus/
Papers and essays will be graded in accordance with the following criteria:1. Clarity and insightfulness of the thesis or focus2. Coherence of the essay.  For example, does it have a beginning, middle, and end in which the view being expressed is presented, explained and summarized?3. Quality of the case that is made to support the thesis.  Note that the goal of the written
6work is not to collect or adduce facts to support an argument but to make an abstract case that may occasionally be supported by various facts. 4. Clarity and usefulness of the supporting references, facts, images, citations, music and awhatever other material is used to support the presentation.  For example:Does the supporting material relate closely to the presentation of the theory or ideas? Are charts, diagrams, pictures or tables relevant? Are quotations from experts illustrative?  Are they cited properly using the MLA or University of Chicago format? If literature or other artistic expressions (e. g., statues, paintings, architecture) are part of the essay are they used clearly and are they cited properly?Does the paper address the issue of sources and references well?  The clearest model is to reserve about two or three minutes somewhere in the course of the discussion to discuss sources and directions for research
