One of our major objectives this semester is to apply the theories we’ve been discussing and our own thinking to the themes of the human condition. For your final assignment (and its rought draft), you will be doing exactly that. Building on materials that you have already submitted earlier in the semester (your identification of a topic, as well as your earlier introduction and argument), you will submit a first draft of a final paper in which you do the following:
Introduce your topic, explaining in language accessible to the educated layperson, what is involved—i.e., what you are talking about, what the issue is, why it matters, what implications it might have for human life—including why your reader should be interested;
Choose and identify at least two perspectives—these can be from philosophers and thinkers we have discussed or will be discussing, as well as other philosophers and thinkers you might want to bring in (though these should be genuine authorities)—and, for each of them, lay out the general outline of their view, making clear what they have to say about human nature or the human condition and what they have to say about your particular topic in as much detail as is necessary—for this, you should cite your sources (APA, MLA, and Chicago are acceptable formats);
For each of these perspectives, analyze and respond to their answers, telling your reader what you think they got right and wrong and why;
Explain what you believe the correct approach to your topic is and defend your view—you should do your best to convince your educated lay reader of the correctness of your view, starting from reasonable premises about the human condition and leading to your conclusion; and,
Finally, conclude, summing up your argument and view and comparing and contrasting it to the other views you have considered, highlighting your and their strengths and weaknesses.
The final document should be in 12-point font double-spaced and submitted in either .doc or .pdf format. The paper will likely be between 6 and 9 pages long, though there is no penalty merely for being longer or shorter than this range.
