INTRODUCTION: Salaries for sports stars in male professional sports continue to grow. The salaries of the top-tier male professional athlete climbs what seems like a new hill every year, and the rise is dramatic in all sports. Salaries for professional athletes in female sports, however, continue to be a fraction of what it is in their male counterparts’ industry. Even the most opinionated person who tilts toward increased salaries for women understands the reasons why, even if it isn’t something that we as a society want to hear. Is there a way to better balance the playing field when it comes to salaries? What are some of the things that could incite change? Is more patience needed? What sports have we achieved equal pay, and why is that?
SIGNIFICANCE OF TOPIC: The topic of equitable salaries in professional sports is something that has been discussed at length. The purpose of the paper is to point out the realities of why salaries are disproportioned, what needs to happen to make things more equitable, and if there is a realistic solution on the horizon.
