PLEASE USE LETTERS below with information to help answer questions for the Essay and attached instructions
Materials
Use the Module 7 Required Readings in your textbook as a resource for writing this discussion post.
Instructions
1. Carefully read the required pages in the textbook.
2. In this 2-part Discussion, prepare to write a 400 word (or greater) essay addressing the prompt based on information in the textbook, directed research, and/or your own research. Plan to write 3-5 paragraphs for this post on the following topic:
A. “In a world of cinematic spectacle, why might we say that live theater still matters?” is a question that is at the end of the module’s PowerPoint on Theater.
B. To help answer this question, compose an essay comparing a live version and a film version of the same scene from the Shakespearean play, “Much Ado About Nothing.”
C. How do these two genres (live theatre and film) compare in regard to the links below?
D. Which is more engaging for the audience?
E. Which do you prefer?
F. Is the live theater version the better way to experience this play or is the film version better (support with at least 2 sentences)? If the filmed versions of Shakespeare’s plays are mostly what audiences experience, could that be a reason why modern audiences do not always care for Shakespeare, as it is not live?
First, read the summary of the whole play (which is brief) to make sure you understand the storyline of this play: https://www.shakespeare.org.uk/explore-shakespeare/shakespedia/shakespeares-plays/much-ado-about-nothing/
In planning to write this response in 3-5 paragraphs, please focus on the film version in one paragraph and the live version(s) in another paragraph and build your discussion into answering the questions above through those paragraphs and building into the last paragraph(s) with the comparisons and final answers to the topic.
Below are a series of links to help focus this assignment instead of watching the entire film and play. Here are links on one particular scene, Act II Scene 3, and the words of the play are here for reference: https://shakespeare.folger.edu/shakespeares-works/much-ado-about-nothing/act-2-scene-3/ . Each link requires some explanation to avoid any confusion:
Link 1: This is from the 1993 film version of this play by Kenneth Branagh, and the clip is from right before the song begins and runs to the end of Act II Scene 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6z6LfdTNQg . This film made the play into a believable scene that is appropriate to the time of Shakespeare.
Link 2: This is a full live adapted show directed by Josie Rourke from the Digital Theatre Plus website. This version is live and it is put together from at least two separate performances for the video production, but the live element is very evident. This version is also adapted, which means it is not trying to be an authentic recreation of the play, but rather it is seemingly set in the 1980’s with costumes/music/props appropriate to that time. Click on the link below, sign in with our college’s credentials for students (username= spcollege and password= establish@5297) and focus on the time listed below which is all of Act II Scene 3, and there is a visual gag necessary for the whole scene to make sense: https://edu.digitaltheatreplus.com/content/productions/much-ado-about-nothing-digital-theatre (50:59 to 1:02:30 is the only scene required for this topic, but if you enjoy it, feel free to watch the whole performance.)
Link 3: This is an extra link of a live production of this play in the Globe Theatre, but it is just the end of Act II Scene 3. But this version helps show what an authentic version of this play may have looked like when it was produced by Shakespeare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkmSIy8PayY
3. Read one of your classmates’ original posts on this topic, but find a post with a different opinion than your own conclusions. Then compose a response post (at least 100 words) that compares your conclusions with your fellow student’s conclusions and discuss whether their conclusions changed your mind or do you still have the same opinions, or perhaps there is a way to combine your conclusions together somehow. Please do not just reword your fellow student’s post with no comparison/synthesizing. Your reply may generate further discussion and create other student replies to your post that may continue the conversation as well.
