Paper Prompt: Peter Abelard, The Story of My Misfortunes
In the Story of My Misfortunes Peter Abelard confesses that throughout his life he was plagued by two diseases: the disease of lust and sensuality, and the disease of pride. Further, Abelard argues that God, through divine grace, provided the cure for his two diseases.
Write an essay examining these two diseases. Include an analysis of how this statement of Abelard helps structure his work. Further, discuss in detail how—according to Abelard—God provided grace by which he was healed. How does this reading of the text change your opinion of Abelard? What is the “function” of his abominable pride evidenced in chapters 1-4? Does Abelard ever demonstrate true humility in this work?
