Must post first.
To introduce the reading: Queer liberalism refers to the political, economic, and social enfranchisement of certain homosexual citizen-subjects, made possible by the extension of certain domestic or family rights: increased protection of sexual privacy, same-sex marriage, and the right to adopt. While such developments have been greeted as progressive, Eng argues that there are hidden costs to queer liberalism, in which the height of queer empowerment is understood as becoming part of a well-propertied, well-employed, and properly consumerist couple-with-children. Such a colorblind and universalizing ideal, Eng also asserts, obscures racial, gender, and economic inequities that are repeated and reinforced within the neoliberal, global economy.
1. How does Eng connect the story of Happy Together to
traditional family structures in Chinese culture?
current economic structures in the world?
2. Choose one moment in the film and discuss it in terms of one cinematic choice. You might ask yourself – how does the camera move? – is the depth of field shallow or deep? – does the camera hold on the scene, or is the clip intercut? – is the tempo speeded up or slowed down? – if there is music, is it diegetic or non-diegetic? – does the music dominate the clip or is it in the background? Then discuss the effects of this choice, that is, how this element shapes the meaning or feel of the clip. Be specific in your response.
