Management-
Conduct field interviews of two individuals currently in a management position on the topic of
motivation at work and then share the findings in a short paper. This can easily be accomplished
over the phone. The aim of this exercise is to give students an opportunity to learn from
practicing professionals on a topic of central importance to managers—how to support strong
and healthy motivation at work.
These field interviews should be conducted over the phone or in person if possible and cannot be
conducted with family members or friends. The exercise is typically less productive if you
interview other student-workers, family members, or friends. This exercise should provide a
good opportunity to learn from a more experienced working professional, perhaps someone who
works in a field of work that might be a career interest after graduation. The required interview
questions are below and you must include an additional question of your own:
 How would you describe your work? What are some of the things that you particularly
like about your work?
 We are currently studying the topic of motivation in one of my classes. What boosts your
motivation at work? If you have ever experienced a period of low motivation, can you
identify things that might have contributed to your losing steam in your work?
 What kinds of rewards or incentives work best to motivate individuals and/or teams who
do your type of work? What kinds of rewards or incentives don’t work so well?”
Make sure you briefly and politely explain the reason for the interview, request a meeting time
(10–20 minutes should be adequate), and thank the contact for their consideration—irrespective
of whether the contact offers a “yes” or a “no” to participation. Make sure you show up for the
meeting on time and move directly to the interview process.
